Each civilization has its own myths, legends or folklore and true to our country’s undaunted spirit, the cowboy has become America’s hero. As the title Corridos (translated Story Songs”) suggests, Luke Reed is able to capture the ideals and culture of the Old West and wrap them up in a captivating way that’s relevant to our present day.

A noted writer and storyteller, Luke Reed has penned cuts for greats such as Randy Travis, Gene Watson, Red Steagall, Don Edwards, Michael Martin Murphey and George Strait. His songs have appeared on seven Wrangler Award winning albums, which are given by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. And in 1997, he won the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western Artists, for excellence in the field of western arts. It’s with this Blue Hat Records release that Luke finally delivers the message himself in his own way, through both his lyrics and music.

In the Native American song “Remember The Eagle,” Luke along with his special guests Waylon Jennings and Bill Miller, delivers a poignant message loosely based on the Greek myth lcarus and Daedalus. Luke is also joined by Too Slim of the famed Riders in the Sky on “If There Wasn’t Any Cows,” a fun tongue-in-cheek song praising the bovine and reminding us that there wouldn’t be any cowboys if it were not for the cows. Of course no western record could be complete unless it has a song that sparks childhood memories of Saturday afternoons watching cowboy movies. “Blue Mesa,” with Luke’s friend Ranger Doug (also of Riders in the Sky), does just that with its melodic harmonies and easygoing tempo. Despite all of the stories of cowboys, horses, prairies, and plans, Corridos makes room for two beautiful love songs, “Adobe Walls,” reminiscent of a love that occurs in a magical time and a magical place, and, “The Spanish Rose,” a tale of love that will live forever.

These tunes have a pure and authentic feel due largely to the face that this ex-rodeo competitor has first hand knowledge of what he writes. The songs have a unique quality that appeals to both the true cowboy and a general audience as well. “A song should tell a story,” Luke explains, “That’s how you get your listener’s attention and how you make them remember a song.” That being the case, Corridos is one piece of country music that’s sure to be remembered for a long time.
